The unit has a stainless steel immersion heater and a sacrificial anode that is designed to decay and preserve the water heater. To check the condition of the anode has always meant draining down UNTILL NOW!!. The anode test button sends a minute electrical charge through the anode. The indicator then tells you when the anode needs changing, usually after at least two or three years. This means that annual checks can take just a few minutes
