What is a Bunded Oil Tank?
A Bunded Oil Tank is simply a tank with another outer layer around it or in other words, a tank within a tank. With the outer tank usually around 10% bigger than the inner tank the double skinned tank means that any leak will be contained. Should the inner tank become damaged then the contents will be contained by the outer tank which in turn protects the inner tank from outside damge. A Non Bunded or single skin tank is obviously a tank with no outer layer. These Non Bunded Tanks are usually sufficient however if there is any risk of damage to the tank in the area that it is placed then a bunded tank will be required.
The Single Skin Oil Tanks and Bunded Oil Tanks are from top brand names including Titan Oil Tanks, Balmoral Oil Tanks and Harlequin all with a pedigree for producing top quality Oil Tanks and Fuel Stations.
When looking for a suitable oil tank for storage of oil at your home for use in oil-based heating, you will be looking at an above- ground storage tank for this application. When you buy a quality oil storage tank for your domestic requirements you will be getting a product that requires little ongoing maintenance and the product will last you for years. The big decision that you will have to make is whether to buy a single skin tank or a bunded oil tank. Bunded simply means that the tank containing the oil is itself within another container to minimise the risk of spillage or accidental damage to the oil containing tank. Bunding means that if any oil is spilled when the container is being filled, then it will be contained by the bunded tank. Also a bunded tank is safer in the event of impact to the exterior of the tank. In all industrial and commercial applications above ground oil storage tanks must be bunded by law. If your domestic above ground oil storage tank exceeds 2,500l then you will have no choice and your oil storage tank must be bunded. Most people would prefer to pay extra for a bunded tank simply to be re-assured that their oil tank meets the best safety standards – and some like to know that if there is any spillage when filling the oil storage tank – then the environment will be protected and they will not have to face a messy clean up.
The size of your house and boiler generally determines what size of storage tank you will need for you oil fuel storage. If you like you can get a slightly larger tank so you can stock up on oil fuel when prices are low and have capacity to store the excess. You may also need a larger capacity oil storage tank if you are using the same oil for cooking and have an oil fuelled cooker. If you are just needing a small oil storage tank to store oil for domestic cooking – very likely you can use a very small unbunded single skin tank.
