How to extend the lifespan of your central heating system

Just like a car, a central heating system will run smoother, quieter and more efficiently when it is serviced regularly. Having your boiler regularly serviced (at least once a year) is highly recommended, but for your central heating to operate to its full potential, the whole system including pipework and radiators should to be given the same level of care and attention.

How and why do the problems start?

Aside of a faulty boiler, the most common symptom of reduced efficiency is sludge build up. Sludge is created as a result of water causing corrosion on the inside of steel radiators over a period of time. This metallic sludge, if left untreated, can damage your boiler, water pump and radiator thermostat valves, cause leaks in radiators and block pipework.

Further complications can arise if you live in a hard water area where limescale build-up can be an issue. This is caused due to the high mineral content of the water which gets deposited on contact with the inner surfaces of the radiators and pipework. Limescale can also greatly reduce the efficiency of your central heating and make your boiler noisy.

The Symptoms

There are many small tell-tale signs that could be an indication of a larger problem. Should you have any of the following, a call to your installer / heating engineer maybe the order of the day.

  • Excessive heat up time

  • Variation in room temperature

  • Cold spots on radiators

  • Boiler noise

The Remedies

The system will need to be flushed to remove the unwanted sludge and limescale. This is achieved adding cleaning chemicals to dislodge and remove the waste from the system such as Fernox F3 Central Heating Cleaner 500ml or Adey MC5 Rapid Flush System Cleaner 500ml. Once the system has been flushed clean and refilled an inhibitor such as Fernox Central Heating Protector F1 500ml is added to prevent further build up of sludge and deposits. Visit our store for a full range of liquid Cleaners and Inhibitors to suit all systems.

Further protection against deposits can be given by adding an inhibitor filter such as the Adey Magnaclean Professional 2 Filter which removes up to 100% of iron oxide in the system which causes sludge deposits. A full range of filters and inhibitors designed for the professional installer is available.

The Benefits

Ensuring your heating system has inhibitors in place offers the following benefits:

  • Protects against corrosion and limescale

  • Prevents boiler noise

  • Stops frequent venting of radiator

  • Prevents sticking pumps

  • Reduces maintenance costs

  • Maintains system efficiency

  • Prevents cold spots in radiators

  • Extends system life

  • Saves on fuel bills

Did you know...

...that some warranties can be invalidated if your central heating system does not have a liquid inhibitor. Ask a professional to test your system for the correct concentration of corrosion inhibitor in the system water.

Keep Warm

A fully serviced central heating system will not only ensure you keep nice and warm this winter, but will help save the environment and help you save money.
